Noble House

In 1986, more than a decade after winding up her celebrated Lymond Chronicles, Dorothy Dunnett began yet another Renaissance roundelay: the House of Niccolò series. In the first installment, Niccolò Rising, she introduced young Nicholas van der Poele--and treated this dyer's apprentice to a breakneck education in commerce, diplomacy, and the erotic arts. Subsequent volumes tracked his career as an entrepreneurial wizard, globetrotter, political gadfly, and (in The Spring of the Ram) dutiful stepfather. Mercurial and Machiavellian (perhaps to a fault!), Dunnett's hero never loses his grip on the reader. Add to that the author's meticulous reconstruction of period detail and you've got a saga to reckon with--and to relish.
